The second annual Impact Summit, held in Glasgow on May 15, highlighted the importance of compassion, humanity and equality in the business sphere. Over 400 attendees came to the SWG3 warehouse, where leading experts and entrepreneurs spoke across the event’s three stages.
Derek Mackay MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Economy and Fair Work, opened proceedings, expressing Scotland’s diversity and inclusion goals as part of the business landscape.
“The happiest countries in the world are those with the most equality.” - Derek Mackay MSP
International keynote speaker, April Wensel, Founder of Compassionate Coding then gave her take on culture in the tech industry, particularly in Silicon Valley, where she spent over a decade working as a Software Developer.
"Changing the ‘toxic tech’ stereotype requires compassion, and compassion starts with yourself. Treat yourself as you would a good friend. Then extend this out to your colleagues and community." - April Wensel
This was echoed throughout Impact Summit, including in a talk about mental health from John Peebles, CEO of Administrate, one of Scotland’s fastest-growing tech startups, and from Irina Preda, AI and Software Developer at Code Your Future, who teach refugees and underprivileged groups valuable coding skills.
Impact Summit, which was created by the Edinburgh-based FutureX team, aims to inspire and celebrate the new age of business by giving a platform to pioneers of values-led business. Speakers from internationally-recognised companies including KeepCup, Karma Cola and Hey Girls, covered this year’s themes of A Sustainable Future, Tech for Good and People Behind the Purpose.
This year’s sponsors and supporters of the event included The Hunter Foundation, Cazenove Capital, The Herald, Compassionate Coding, Triodos Bank and the Crowne Plaza. Bruce Walker, Co-founder of FutureX, said:"At FutureX, we predict that within the next decade the superstar high-growth companies will have to be sustainable, diverse and inclusive. We have witnessed the values-led business movement grow with huge momentum - Impact Summit is the by-product of a community that wants to see a change in how we do business."
